University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill graduate student Tailei Qi has been found unfit to stand trial after two mental evaluations. Qi was charged with first-degree murder and possession of a gun on educational property after fatally shooting associate professor Zijie Yan on August 28. Qi, who likely suffers from untreated schizophrenia, demonstrated delusional thinking, auditory hallucinations, and has been engaging in self-harm while in detention. As a result, a judge ruled that he is incapable of comprehending his situation, assisting in his legal defense, and understanding court proceedings. Qi will be committed to Central Regional Hospital for psychological treatment, and doctors will be required to notify the district attorney if his condition improves.

The August shooting at UNC-Chapel Hill sent the campus into lockdown, and Qi was arrested without incident. Two weeks later, the campus went into lockdown again after a person was spotted brandishing a gun in the student union building. An autopsy revealed that Yan had been shot multiple times in his office, and the police found nine 9mm cartridge casings but did not recover a weapon.

Qi, listed in the Department of Applied Physical Sciences, was advised by Yan and the two co-authored research papers. It remains unclear how Qi, who was in the United States on a student visa, obtained the gun. It is essential to note the mental health issues that may be involved in this tragic incident and to ensure that Qi receives appropriate treatment.
