Supermarket butcher, Ray Wilkins, was hailed as a hero after he stopped a brazen bandit from robbing his Queens store and then assaulting his special needs co-worker. The incident occurred on Friday night when Wilkins saw Jack Crumbley, the alleged assailant, beating his co-worker in the store parking lot. Wilkins intervened and managed to stop Crumbley from causing any more harm to his co-worker. When he tried to call 911, Crumbley turned his attention to Wilkins and assaulted him as well. Eventually, Wilkins flagged down two NYPD transit cops who were able to arrest Crumbley.
Crumbley, a violent career criminal with over 20 prior arrests, was wanted for a previous unprovoked attack on a bus driver and had an open bench warrant for that incident. Despite being released after being initially arrested for the bus driver assault, Crumbley continued to pose a threat to the community. Now, he has been charged with robbery, assault, and harassment in connection with the incident at the Stop & Shop.
Although Wilkins suffered some injuries during the encounter, his quick thinking and actions helped to prevent further harm to his co-worker and resulted in the arrest of the dangerous criminal. Wilkins’ bravery and willingness to stand up not only for himself but also for his co-worker demonstrate the type of community spirit and dedication to safety that is needed in the face of such threats. Thanks to Wilkins’ intervention, the store and the local community were spared further harm from the criminal actions of Jack Crumbley.
