Officers in Lubbock, Texas fatally shot 34-year-old Manuel Guillen following a domestic disturbance on Friday night. The officers were responding to a report that Guillen had assaulted and threatened his mother at their home. When they arrived, Guillen’s mother had already escaped, and a police sergeant suggested they leave as Guillen was alone in the house and no longer a threat. However, Guillen then emerged from the home carrying two knives and approached the officers. Despite being commanded to stop, Guillen continued to charge at the officers, prompting them to open fire. Guillen later died at a hospital.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on leave, and the incident is under investigation. It is not known why the officers did not attempt to arrest Guillen for the alleged assault on his mother. Further details, such as whether Guillen was struck by gunfire from both officers, have not been released.
This tragic incident highlights the high-stress situations law enforcement officers often face and the split-second decision-making they must undertake. However, it also raises questions about the use of force and the procedures followed by the officers. As the investigation continues, more information will hopefully emerge to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the shooting of Manuel Guillen.
