Michigan State University’s board of trustees has approved a $15 million settlement with the families of three students who were killed during a mass shooting on campus earlier this year. The families of sophomores Arielle Anderson and Brian Fraser, and junior Alexandria Verner will receive the settlement. The university did not disclose the terms of the settlement but attorneys for the families confirmed the $15 million figure. Anderson, Fraser, and Verner were shot on February 13th when a gunman opened fire at two locations on campus. The shooter, Anthony Dwayne McRae, was killed by police after the incident. The families of the victims did not seek to blame MSU for the deaths but wanted answers as to how tragedies like this could be prevented in the future. The settlement will allow the Verner family to increase Alexandria’s scholarship fund and continue her legacy. The university was criticized for lacking armed security, metal detectors, and efficient emergency alerts during the shooting. Several victims who survived the shooting have filed notices of intent to sue the university. MSU remains committed to enhancing safety on campus and providing mental health support to the community as it continues to heal.
