A man is in custody after police in White Settlement, Texas, said he struck a pedestrian and then drove to a restaurant parking lot with the dead pedestrian in his passenger seat. The incident occurred Saturday night, and police began their investigation after receiving a welfare check call just after 11 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, an officer found a gray Kia Forte with significant damage to the front end, hood, and windshield, as well as what appeared to be a dead body in the passenger seat. The driver, Nestor Joel Lujan Flores, was detained, and first responders confirmed that the person in the passenger seat was indeed dead.

Flores reportedly told police that he thought he had struck an animal in Dallas and then drove to the restaurant parking lot. However, he did not contact authorities. Through the use of Flock cameras, which track vehicles by license plates, police determined that the crash may have occurred between Arlington and White Settlement. Investigators believe that the pedestrian was thrown inside the vehicle and ended up in the passenger seat. Despite the incident occurring around 6 p.m., no one called 911 until hours later.

Flores is currently in custody, and criminal charges are pending further review by the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office. The victim’s name has not been released, and police are still investigating the case. Multiple agencies were contacted to see if they had any information about the crash, but no area agencies had reported a hit-and-run or pedestrian crash at the time of the incident.
