Frederick County School Board Member Sentenced to Jail Time for Participation in Capitol Attack
Miles Adkins, a school board member in Frederick County, Virginia, was sentenced to jail time for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Adkins, 39, pleaded guilty to two federal misdemeanors related to the incident. Despite calls for him to step down from his position, Adkins has stated he will not be resigning.
Adkins’ defense lawyer stated in court that he was influenced by conservative media and former President Donald Trump, leading him to believe there were irregularities in the 2020 election results. Adkins admitted to storming the Capitol, disrupting proceedings, and assisting others in gaining access to the building.
The judge sentenced Adkins to pay a fine, serve two years probation, and spend 12 days in jail only on weekends. Concerns have been raised about Adkins’ past convictions, including a DUI and a hit-and-run, and the impact this may have on the community and the children he serves as a school board member.
Community activists and parents have called for Adkins to resign, citing the damage to the integrity of the school board and its functions. Virginia law allows for the removal of a school board member for a felony conviction, but Adkins’ convictions are misdemeanors.
The start date for Adkins’ jail sentence will be determined by the Department of Corrections, after which he will need to serve his 12 days over consecutive weekends. The community is divided on Adkins’ future on the school board, with some supporting his resignation and others emphasizing the need to focus on education and the well-being of the students.
