Starting Monday, several new laws will go into effect across Virginia, impacting cat owners, drivers, gun owners, and individuals with disabilities. One major change is the banning of declawing cats, except for therapeutic purposes. Roanoke Valley SPCA supports this law, citing the pain and issues it causes for cats. Additionally, individuals are now allowed to claim road kill if they hit a deer, bear, turkey, or elk with their car.
Farm vehicle owners are now required to register their unregistered vehicles through the DMV, after reports of abuse during COVID-19. Gun laws have also been updated, with a ban on auto-sears that convert semi-automatic firearms and a felony charge for guardians who allow their children access to guns if the child poses a threat.
Recent changes also benefit individuals with disabilities, as the duration to contract services for intellectually disabled Virginians has been extended to 365 days. Governor Glenn Youngkin and First Lady Suzanne Youngkin announced this change at the Salem YMCA, addressing previous issues in accessing appropriate help and funding.
Overall, 824 bills will become law in Virginia, covering a wide range of issues. For a full list of new laws, visit the WSLS 10 website.
