Restoring a National Park in Mozambique: Overcoming the Devastation of Civil War

Veterinarian Mercia Angela is working to rehabilitate a baby pangolin rescued from traffickers in Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique. The park, once ravaged by civil war, is now thriving thanks to restoration efforts led by American philanthropist Greg Carr. Carr committed $36 million in funding to restore the park’s wildlife, infrastructure, and to benefit local communities. The park has seen significant progress, with increased populations of various species of animals, including painted dogs. However, there are ongoing challenges such as human-wildlife conflict, with elephants crossing park boundaries to raid crops. To mitigate these conflicts, innovative strategies like hanging metal sheets to deter elephants, beehive fences, and repellent ropes soaked in chilli are being used. Despite these efforts, concerns such as the absence of giraffes in the park and the need for more animal reintroductions persist. The success of Gorongosa’s restoration project is a testament to the power of conservation efforts and community involvement in promoting biodiversity and protecting wildlife habitats.
