Virginia head basketball coach Tony Bennett has signed a contract extension that will keep him with the program through the 2029-30 season. The extension includes an automatic one-year rollover through 2030-31 if Bennett is still coaching in April 2026. The deal adds four years to his existing agreement and includes an annual 5% raise, maintaining his total compensation at $4,020,287 for the upcoming year. The buyout remains at $250,000 for the remainder of the contract if Bennett were to leave.

Bennett, who has been with Virginia since 2009, has led the team to 14 straight winning seasons, including a national championship in 2019. Under his coaching, the Cavaliers have played in 10 NCAA tournaments, reaching three Sweet 16s. However, the team has not won a tournament game since the 2019 title game.

The new contract extension reflects the university’s confidence in Bennett’s leadership and coaching ability. The coach’s emphasis on defense, learned at Virginia, has also translated well for former players like Ryan Dunn, who was recently drafted in the first round of the NBA draft.

Despite recent NCAA tournament failures, Virginia fans can look forward to Bennett’s continued guidance and the potential for future success under his leadership.
