Virginia State Board of Elections certified the narrow defeat of Republican Rep. Bob Good to challenger John McGuire in the state’s primaries. Good, a conservative congressman endorsed by Trump, plans to seek a recount as the margin was only 0.6%. Good must pay for the recount himself since the margin is larger than 0.5%. He has also raised legal challenges to block McGuire’s victory, citing alleged irregularities in Lynchburg. Good’s campaign pointed out issues like ballots retrieved after Election Day and fire alarms at polling places, but election officials defended the integrity of the election results.
McGuire’s team has expressed confidence in the results despite Good’s efforts to undermine them. Good’s campaign manager affirmed their commitment to seeking a recount, and they have 10 days to file the petition. Both Good and McGuire have raised concerns about election integrity, with McGuire urging supporters to deliver a victory margin “too big to rig.” If Good loses, he would be the first House incumbent to lose a primary challenge nationally this year. The Good-McGuire race highlighted divisions in the Republican Party and tested Trump’s influence on GOP voters.
The Republican nominee, whether Good or McGuire, is favored to win in November over Democratic nominee Gloria Witt in Virginia’s conservative-leaning 5th Congressional District. The outcome of the recount will ultimately determine who will face Witt in the general election.
