Pro-Palestine protesters made a bold statement by climbing onto the roof of Australia’s Parliament House in Canberra and unfurling banners with messages like “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” and “No peace on stolen land”. The demonstration, carried out by members of the Renegade Activists group, was in response to recent divisions within Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s Labor government, particularly regarding the suspension of a Muslim Senator who voted in favor of recognizing a Palestinian state.

During their one-hour protest, the activists accused the Israeli government of committing “war crimes” in Gaza with the support of the United States, and criticized the Australian government for being complicit in these alleged abuses. Police and security were present to ensure the safety of onlookers and attempted to remove the protesters from the roof.

This act has been deemed a serious breach of Parliament’s security, with calls for an investigation into how the protesters managed to access the roof. The war in Gaza, which began with Palestinian fighters entering southern Israel and has resulted in high civilian casualties, has sparked international condemnation and accusations of war crimes being committed on both sides. Despite ongoing protests and support for Palestinian statehood, Australia has yet to officially recognize Palestine as a state. The suspension of Senator Fatima Payman for her pro-Palestine stance has further highlighted the political tensions surrounding this issue within Australian politics.
