Virginia officials certified the results of last month’s congressional primaries and reassured the public of the integrity of the voting systems. The 5th District GOP primary between Rep. Bob Good and Sen. John McGuire led to scrutiny due to the close finish. McGuire’s campaign lawyer confirmed no irregularities. Good may seek a recount, but legalities prevent it at this time.

Following the primary, Good raised concerns about the election’s legitimacy, citing issues like fire alarms at polling places and mishandling of ballots in Lynchburg. Officials dismissed these as minor incidents not affecting the overall outcome.

The state elections board voted to potentially remove a local GOP official, Maria Anne Kinney, accused of failing to perform her duties and behaving inappropriately. Kinney is due in court on a misdemeanor assault charge related to an incident during election business.

Looking towards the general election, a drawing determined the ballot order for political parties, with Democrats getting the top slot. The traditional crystal bowl used for the drawing was replaced after it shattered.
