Virginia’s Department of Conservation and Recreation recently celebrated the 250th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson’s purchase of the Natural Bridge in Rockbridge County. This stunning rock formation, standing at 215 feet tall, has been a natural wonder in the Shenandoah Valley for centuries.
The ownership of the Natural Bridge was officially transferred to the Virginia State Park System just over a year ago on June 15, 2023, allowing it to be classified as a Virginia State Park. Previously owned by the Trust for Public Land, a national nonprofit organization, the transition of ownership was coordinated by the DCR.
The ceremony held to mark the anniversary attracted crowds eager to witness this unique geological formation. Those who wish to explore the Natural Bridge further can book a Lantern Tour, allowing them to experience the beauty and history of this landmark up close.
The Natural Bridge is just one of many beautiful rock formations to visit in Virginia, showcasing the state’s natural beauty and rich history. Visitors and locals alike can marvel at the wonder of the Natural Bridge, a true gem in Rockbridge County. As it enters its next chapter as a state park, the Natural Bridge will continue to be a beloved destination for all who wish to experience the beauty of Virginia’s natural landscapes.
