Former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican Excommunicated by the Holy See

The Vatican announced on Friday that Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò has been excommunicated for refusing to recognize the authority of Pope Francis and the liberal reforms enacted after the Second Vatican Council. Archbishop Viganò, known for his conservative views and criticism of the Pope, has been a vocal supporter of right-wing conspiracy theories and former President Donald J. Trump. He also called for the Pope’s resignation in 2018 over allegations of covering up sexual abuse and has publicly criticized the Pope’s messages of inclusivity and support for vaccines.

Despite being excommunicated, Archbishop Viganò will keep his title but will not be allowed to celebrate Mass, receive sacraments, or hold official positions within the church. He has not responded to the Vatican’s decision, and has previously refused to recognize the authority of the tribunal that judged him.

This move by the Vatican is part of a larger trend of Francis punishing outspoken right-wing clergy within the Church. In recent years, other conservative figures like Rev. Frank Pavone and Cardinal Raymond Burke have faced disciplinary action for their views and actions. This latest excommunication highlights the ongoing tensions within the Catholic Church between traditionalist and more liberal factions.
