Governor Glenn Youngkin and First Lady Suzanne Youngkin honored the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation with a 2024 Spirit of Virginia Award on the Fourth of July. The foundation was recognized for its efforts in preserving and bringing to life the history of Virginia, and for portraying a more inclusive and complete history of all Americans. The award acknowledges exceptional contributions in various sectors such as education, culture, and philanthropy.
The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, a living history museum, aims to tell a more comprehensive story of America’s past, beyond the traditional focus on aristocratic history. The first lady emphasized that Virginia’s history is America’s history, and the foundation plays a crucial role in enriching the community by showcasing the nation’s heritage.
Cliff Fleet, president, and CEO of Colonial Williamsburg, expressed gratitude for the recognition and highlighted the importance of sharing an inclusive and factual history of the nation. The foundation is dedicated to presenting a complete narrative of American history as the country prepares for its 250th anniversary in 2026.
The Spirit of Virginia award is part of a series of awards given out by Governor Youngkin to celebrate outstanding contributions in Virginia. Previous recipients included An Achievable Dream and the Wildlife Foundation of Virginia. Colonial Williamsburg’s commitment to portraying a full and accurate history of the nation aligns with the goal of fostering a more perfect union.
