Hamas signals willingness for ceasefire by dropping key demand, officials claim

Hamas has reportedly given initial approval for a US-backed proposal for a phased cease-fire in Gaza, after dropping a key demand for a complete end to the war. The deal, which includes a “full and complete” six-week cease-fire, would see the release of hostages in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners. Israeli forces would also withdraw from densely populated parts of Gaza during this time. The second phase of the cease-fire would involve the release of remaining hostages and prisoners, while the third phase would focus on reconstruction efforts.

This potential breakthrough in negotiations could lead to the first pause in fighting since last November and could pave the way for further talks on ending the devastating nine-month war that has claimed thousands of lives. Hamas is still seeking written guarantees that Israel will continue to negotiate a permanent cease-fire deal once the first phase is in place.

Months of talks have been hindered by Hamas’ demands for a complete end to the war, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has offered to pause the fighting until Israel achieves its goal of destroying Hamas’ military and governing capabilities. This apparent compromise by Hamas to approve the phased cease-fire deal marks a significant development in efforts to bring an end to the conflict in Gaza.
