Paris’ iconic Moulin Rouge cabaret has successfully restored its famous red windmill after it collapsed earlier this year. A special ceremony featuring can-can dancing celebrated the windmill’s return, marking its significance as an emblem of the Montmartre neighborhood. The windmill, first illuminated in 1889, is a symbol of the cabaret’s rich history and cultural importance. The cabaret, known for being the birthplace of the modern can-can dance, attracts over 600,000 visitors annually and has been featured in various forms of media, including a 2001 film starring Nicole Kidman and a musical adaptation that premiered on Broadway in 2019. The structure’s collapse was a result of a technical issue, but fortunately, no one was harmed, and the mayor confirmed the structure was not in danger. As the cabaret prepares to celebrate its 135th anniversary this year, the restoration of the windmill comes just in time for the Olympic torch relay passing through the area on 15 July. The Moulin Rouge remains a popular tourist attraction, showcasing the rich history and vibrant culture of Paris.
