Southern West Virginia will be buzzing with youth sports excitement this weekend as two West Virginia Little League state tournaments are set to take place in the area. The baseball 8-10 division will kick things off on Saturday at Sophia Little League, with 12 teams playing six games. Jefferson and Hedgesville will join on Sunday to bring the total to 14 teams.
The softball 10-12 division will start on Sunday at Fayetteville Little League, with 12 teams playing eight games. Marty Jones, a District 4 assistant administrator, expressed gratitude to both leagues and the communities for their support despite challenging weather conditions.
Both tournaments will be organized into Mountaineer and Herd Brackets, leading up to the crowning of state champions in both baseball and softball. The softball champion will advance to the Southeast Regional in Georgia, while the baseball champion will compete in a tournament in either North Carolina or Tennessee.
The tournaments mark a significant occasion for Sophia and Fayetteville Little Leagues, hosting state tournaments for the first time in several years. Visitors from across West Virginia will be welcomed to the area, bringing economic benefits to Beckley and the surrounding communities.
