Dr. Opal Lee, known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” visited Richmond on July 6 to meet with residents and talk about her lifelong fight for racial equality. At 97 years old, Dr. Lee continues to advocate for Juneteenth, the holiday that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved black people in Texas on June 19th. Richmond Mayor LeVar Stoney greeted Dr. Lee at the airport, acknowledging her significant role in making Juneteenth a recognized holiday. Dr. Lee’s activism has spanned decades, with highlights including a 1400-mile walk from Texas to Washington D.C. in 2016 to raise awareness for Juneteenth. Her efforts were recognized in 2021 when President Biden signed Juneteenth into law and in 2024 when she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Dr. Lee emphasizes the importance of individuals taking action in the fight for change, urging people to work towards educating themselves and others to spread love instead of hate.
