The Virginia Agricultural Best Management Practices Cost-Share Program (VACS) has received a record $207 million in funding for fiscal year 2025, an increase of $82.1 million from the previous year. This program, administered by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), aims to encourage farmers to adopt best management practices that protect water quality in the state. Farmers can receive up to $300,000 in state cost-share reimbursement for practices such as cover crops, nutrient management plans, and livestock stream-exclusion systems.

DCR Director Matt Wells praised the program for providing farmers with the tools and financial support needed to implement effective conservation practices. The VACS program is administered in partnership with Virginia’s soil and water conservation districts, which provide technical assistance and funding opportunities tailored to each farmer’s specific needs.

Dr. Kendall Tyree, executive director of the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Districts, commended the governor and General Assembly for their support of voluntary conservation initiatives and emphasized the importance of the SWCDs in distributing cost-share funding and providing assistance to farmers.
