Since the beginning of Israel’s war on Gaza in October, at least 120 United Nations-run schools serving as shelters for displaced Palestinians have been hit by Israeli attacks. Families living in these overcrowded and unsanitary conditions face fatigue and trauma. Despite difficult conditions, many seek out these schools for relative safety, guided by past experiences where these spaces provided refuge.
Journalist Mohammed Mhawish recalls sheltering in a UN-run school in Gaza City after his home was destroyed in an Israeli attack, emphasizing the lack of alternative residential compounds in Gaza. Mohammed describes the shortages they faced in terms of food, water, and medicine, as well as the constant threat of bombardment. For many, these schools provide a sense of support and community, although the conditions can be unbearable, especially for children.
UNRWA’s communication officer Louise Wateridge highlights the challenges in getting humanitarian supplies into Gaza due to restrictions imposed by Israel. With nine in ten people in Gaza displaced and facing deteriorating living conditions, concerns are growing about the spread of diseases such as cholera. Psychologist Ahmad Swais notes the negative psychological impact on individuals and families gathered in these crowded shelters, especially children who are in urgent need of support.
Despite the hardships, those living in UNRWA schools consider themselves fortunate compared to those living in even worse conditions. The ongoing conflict in Gaza continues to displace civilians and exacerbate the already dire humanitarian situation in the region.
