Hung Cao claims Unleash America funds being used to gain presence on Fox and Newsmax

Hung Cao, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, finally addressed allegations regarding the misrepresentation of funds raised by the Unleash America super PAC. Instead of clarifying why the money didn’t go to Virginia Republican candidates as intended, Cao dismissed the report as a “hit job” by the left. He claimed to have used the funds to gain media exposure on platforms like Fox and NewsMax.

Cao initially stated he left the PAC in May 2023, but documentation shows he actually resigned on June 15 of that year. Despite repeated attempts by USA Today to obtain answers on the PAC’s finances, the campaign remained unresponsive except for a memo sent through an intermediary.

Unleash America raised a total of $148,489, with Cao’s Senate campaign contributing $45,000. However, the funds were not used to support Virginia’s Republican candidates as intended. Instead, money went to various expenses including legal fees, campaign staff payments, and fundraising expenses.

While Cao’s official Senate campaign did donate some money to Virginia candidates outside of the super PAC, the bulk of the funds raised by Unleash America were not given to support GOP candidates in the state. The discrepancies in Cao’s handling of the super PAC’s finances raise questions about transparency and accountability in his campaign.
