A police officer was wounded in a knife attack in the Champs-Élysées neighborhood of Paris on Thursday, with the assailant being immediately ‘neutralized’ by authorities. The attack occurred in the 8th arrondissement as police were responding to a call from officers securing a store. The Interior Minister, Gerald Darmanin, confirmed the incident and stated that the perpetrator was prevented from taking further action by police officers.

This attack comes as the French capital is already on high alert just days before the Summer Olympics’ opening ceremony on 26 July. This follows another incident earlier in the week where a French soldier was stabbed and wounded while patrolling Paris outside the Gare de l’Est train station. The attacker in that case was taken to a psychiatric hospital.

As a result of the recent attacks, security concerns have heightened in Paris, with authorities remaining vigilant to prevent further incidents. Darmanin will continue in his role as Interior Minister until a new government is formed following inconclusive legislative elections earlier this month.

The safety and security of Paris residents and visitors remain a top priority as authorities work to ensure the successful and peaceful hosting of the upcoming Summer Olympics.
