Former President Donald Trump is currently leading President Joe Biden in Virginia, according to a recent poll conducted by Emerson College and sponsored by WRIC’s parent company Nexstar. The poll found that 45% of registered voters in Virginia support Trump, compared to 43% for Biden. This shrinking gap should be a warning sign for the Biden campaign, especially since Biden beat Trump in Virginia by ten points during the 2020 presidential election.
One of the main reasons for Biden’s decline in support is the preference of Independent voters for a change in leadership, with 46% of them planning to vote for Trump compared to only 38% for Biden. Independent voters also cited Biden’s age as a concern, feeling that he may be too old to effectively serve as president, especially after the debate with Trump highlighted Biden’s occasional moments of weakness.
Despite the fact that the poll was conducted in mid-July, likely after an attempt on Trump’s life, the sympathy generated by such events often leads to a temporary increase in voter support. In a five-way race that included independent candidates, Trump’s lead in Virginia widened to 5%, with a margin of error of just 3%. This poll suggests that Trump has a strong base of support in Virginia and could pose a serious challenge to Biden in the upcoming presidential election.
