A mother and son from Indiana and Virginia have been accused of teaming up to strangle the man’s grandmother to death at a nursing home in Norfolk, Virginia. Heather Cummings and her son, Clifton Cummings, face charges of second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder for the death of 81-year-old Cleo Loizides. Court documents allege that Heather held down her mother while Clifton used a strap to strangle her, with marks consistent with strangulation found on the victim’s neck.

Cleo was pronounced dead at Commonwealth Senior Living at Leigh Hall where she was found unresponsive in her room. The death was initially classified as undetermined but was later deemed a homicide, leading to the arrest of the mother-son duo. Both parties allegedly confessed to the crime, with Heather telling her mother to “just let go” during the heinous act.

During a court hearing, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Victoria Kapper detailed the events leading to Cleo’s death, emphasizing the tragic circumstances. The care facility where the incident occurred has been providing support to its staff during this difficult time and continues to cooperate with the investigation.

Heather was denied bond and appeared in court in a wheelchair due to health issues, while Clifton was granted competency and sanity evaluations. The trial is set to begin after the evaluations are complete, and both defendants are scheduled to appear back in court for preliminary hearings in September. The motive for the murder remains unclear, as neither defendant has commented on the case. Cleo is remembered in an obituary as a former model who later worked in banking and met her husband while volunteering in a local theater.
