Illinois deputy Sean Grayson, who shot and killed Sonya Massey in her home after responding to her call about a prowler, has been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery, and official misconduct. Grayson, who is white, shot Massey, who was Black, in the face despite her showing no aggression. The Illinois State Police and body camera footage did not find his use of deadly force justified. The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office has apologized to Massey’s family, acknowledging that Grayson’s actions did not align with their standards.
Grayson remains in custody awaiting trial after being denied pre-trial release. Governor J.B. Pritzker expressed outrage over Massey’s death, emphasizing that she deserved protection. Public outcry and protests demanding justice have ensued since Massey’s death.
Attorney Ben Crump, representing Massey’s family, views the criminal charges against Grayson as an important milestone in the pursuit of justice. Massey’s family had the opportunity to view the body camera footage and plans for its release to the public have been made with their approval.
The tragedy has highlighted the ongoing issue of police violence towards Black individuals across the country. Massey’s family and supporters are seeking answers and accountability for her unnecessary death at the hands of law enforcement.
