Heather Cummings, a 53-year-old woman from Hobart, Indiana, and her 24-year-old son Clifton Cummings from Norfolk, Virginia, have been arrested on charges of second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder after allegedly strangling Cleo Loizides, Heather’s 81-year-old mother and Clifton’s grandmother, at a senior living facility in Norfolk. The incident, which took place on June 30, was initially classified as undetermined but has now been reclassified as a homicide.

According to court documents, Heather held down her mother while Clifton used the strap of his bag to strangle her. Both Heather and Clifton allegedly confessed to the crime, but no motive has been provided in the documents. Authorities found marks on Loizides’ neck consistent with strangulation when they arrived at the scene.

During a court hearing, it was revealed that Loizides was last seen alive around 5 p.m. on the evening of the incident. An employee found her unresponsive later that night and called for medical help. Both Heather and Clifton have been denied bond, and Clifton’s attorney has requested competency and sanity evaluations for his client.

Loizides was described as having had a successful career as a model in the 1960s and later working in banking. Commonwealth Senior Living, where the incident took place, has cooperated with the investigation and offered support to their staff in the wake of the tragedy. Officials at the facility have directed any questions to the police.

The preliminary hearings for Heather and Clifton Cummings are scheduled for September 23.
