The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is currently investigating the death of a third dog after its stay at the PetSmart PetsHotel in Potomac Yard. The agency was initially contacted on July 1, 2024, regarding the death of a dog while being boarded at the PetsHotel on Richmond Highway in Alexandria, VA. An autopsy was performed on the animal, but results are pending. Two additional dogs have since been reported to have fallen ill and died after being boarded at the same PetsHotel, with cremation preventing animal autopsies. These incidents are all believed to have occurred during the same timeframe.
PetSmart has been cooperating with the investigation and has issued a statement expressing their commitment to pet care and safety. They mentioned that the incidents are unique and have different causes such as underlying conditions and older age, not related to their care. The company is conducting retraining with associates at the Potomac Yard PetsHotel to ensure safety standards are upheld.
The investigation remains ongoing, with the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria working to determine the causes of the dog’s deaths. As pet lovers themselves, PetSmart is saddened by the loss of the pets and is offering support to those involved. Concerned pet owners are urged to be cautious when boarding their pets and ensure the facilities they choose uphold the highest safety standards.
