A new report from the United Nations predicts that the global population will peak at 10.3 billion people in the mid-2080s, earlier than previously thought. The report shows that while the population is still growing, the rate of growth is slowing down, as evidenced by dropping global fertility rates. The current global fertility rate is 2.25 births per woman, which is lower than it was three decades ago. Over half of all countries have a fertility rate below the replacement rate of 2.1 births per woman, indicating a decline in population in these countries. In fact, the population has already peaked in 63 countries, including Germany, China, and Russia. Africa has the highest fertility rate of any continent, while Europe has the lowest. In the United States, the fertility rate reached a record low in 2023, with more women choosing to have children in their 30s rather than in their 20s. Economic and societal factors have contributed to this trend, making it more socially acceptable to have children later in life. Overall, the report highlights the changing demographics and fertility trends across the globe.
