Nate Yeary from Apprentice School and Dylan Weber from Christopher Newport were honored as the state College Division Player and Pitcher of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors. Yeary was joined by Nick Redman and Nolan Edwards on the first team, and Weber was accompanied by Brandon Cassedy, Kyle Lewis, and Lincoln Lubsen on the first team. The second team included players such as Micah Fox, Thomas Crandall, Camden Weston, and Jeremy Harmon.
VCU promoted former assistant Sean Thompson to head coach after the departure of Bradley LeCroy to Liberty, making him the youngest head coach in NCAA Division I baseball. Liberty players Kaidon Salter and CJ Bazile Jr. were named Preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in Conference USA after leading the team to the championship last season.
In Little League, the Fleet Park Senior League team made it to the final four in the Southeast Region tournament after wins over Tennessee and Florida. In basketball, Keith Hornsby’s Assembly Ball team advanced to The Basketball Tournament’s round of 16, while Jermaine Marrow’s Sideline Cancer team lost in the round of 32.
Newport News native Alex Lewis joined Chowan’s coaching staff, and Quentin Acree was promoted to assistant coach at Christopher Newport. In college softball, Morgan Smith and Caty Reeves joined coaching staffs at CNU and Virginia, respectively. Kendra Herbenar joined CNU’s women’s lacrosse coaching staff.
Xander Goboy shot a 76 at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, and Trevor McCarthy leads jockeys at Colonial Downs with five race victories. Trainers Michael Trombetta, Brittany Russell, and Carlos Munoz have each won four races.
