A British PR guru hired to manage the reputation of Jeffrey Epstein’s accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell reportedly suggested to her that reports about Virginia Giuffre’s past allegations of rape were “helpful leakage” that could discredit her. Court documents show that Ross Gow, working as Maxwell’s spokesman, sent emails to her with links to media articles about a case from Giuffre’s childhood in which she claimed to have been raped by two older teenagers.
The case involving Giuffre, then 14, was not pursued by prosecutors due to concerns about her credibility. The emails between Gow and Maxwell were part of a tranche of documents unsealed by a US court in a defamation case brought by Giuffre against Maxwell, who later settled the case.
The correspondence sheds light on the PR and legal strategy pursued by Maxwell and her team to rebut Giuffre’s claims of being a “sex slave” to Epstein and being trafficked to famous figures. Gow and Maxwell’s lawyer at the time advised her to issue a strong rebuttal and distance herself from Epstein.
Maxwell was later found guilty of trafficking women and girls for Epstein to abuse and is currently serving a 20-year sentence. Epstein was arrested in 2019 on sex trafficking charges but died by suicide in prison while awaiting trial. The emails show how Maxwell and her team sought to counter Giuffre’s claims through media statements and legal strategies.
