The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris have begun, with athletes from the University of Virginia set to compete. A total of 20 UVA-affiliated athletes, including nine multi-time Olympians and six medalists from previous Olympics, will be representing their countries in a variety of sports. The Virginia swimming & diving program is well-represented, with UVA’s Todd DeSorbo coaching the women’s side of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team, which includes several Cavalier swimmers. Notable swimmers include Paige Madden, Kate Douglass, and Alex Walsh, who have all previously medaled in the Olympics. In addition to swimming, UVA alumni will also compete in tennis, soccer, track & field, equestrian, para-rowing, para-cycling, and goalball. Two former UVA athletes, Andrenette Knight and Pien Dicke, will serve as alternates for the Olympics. UVA women’s basketball alum Tammi Reiss will be an assistant coach for the U.S. Women’s 3×3 Basketball Team. Fans can follow along with the UVA-affiliated athletes on VirginiaSports.com and UVA Today, which both have dedicated pages for tracking their progress at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
