The Virginia Democratic Delegation has voted overwhelmingly to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as their choice for president during an internal survey, hoping to reverse recent polling that showed the state leaning towards Republican nominee Donald Trump. The quick refocusing of allegiance following President Biden’s decision to not seek reelection was led by senior elected Democrats and Black lawmakers who praised Harris for injecting enthusiasm into the campaign.
The Biden-Harris campaign in Virginia has officially shifted to become the Harris for President campaign, with all staffers and field offices now supporting Harris. The announcement comes amid polls showing Trump tied with Biden in Virginia, surprising many after the state preferred Biden by a significant margin in 2020.
Political analysts believe that Harris could boost Democratic turnout among Black voters and suburban White women, who are fatigued with Trump and concerned about issues like access to abortion. The Virginia Legislative Black Caucus endorsed Harris, highlighting her accomplishments in civil rights, environmental protections, reproductive justice, and economic policies.
Sen. Tim Kaine is confident that Harris will win the nomination on the first ballot at the Democratic National Convention next month. The Republican Party of Virginia, on the other hand, remains focused on their strategy despite the change in the Democratic candidate to Harris.
The enthusiastic support for Harris within the Virginia Democratic Delegation reflects a hope for change and a belief that her historic candidacy can energize voters to defeat Trump in the upcoming election.
