A small plane carrying 19 people, mostly airline employees, crashed shortly after takeoff in Kathmandu, Nepal, killing 18 people. The pilot was seriously injured and taken to the hospital as the only survivor. The plane, operated by Saurya Airlines, was bound for Pokhara for maintenance when it crashed on the east side of the runway. The cause of the crash remains unclear. In a separate incident in January 2023, 72 people were killed in a plane crash in Nepal, including at least two U.S. citizens and two permanent residents. Yeti Airlines Flight 691 crashed just before landing at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal called it a tragic incident, and a full rescue operation was launched by the Nepali army and police.
