Three college friends, UVA grads Will Gemma, Justin Black, and Dietrich Teschner found a new passion for adventure during the pandemic in 2020. Despite their diverse backgrounds in writing, music, and acting, the trio came together in Richmond and embarked on a journey to explore the James River. This led to the creation of their first documentary-style film, Headwaters Down, which received widespread support in 2021.

As lockdowns lifted, the friends continued their journey down the James River, changing from canoes to kayaks for their second film, Tidal River, which debuted in February 2024. Along the way, they immersed themselves in Virginia’s river community, realizing the importance of rivers to local communities.

Their production company, Headwaters Down Productions, sees these films as just the beginning, with plans to create more projects focused on water-related topics. The trio hopes to leverage their current work as a springboard for future films.

Their love for the James River and passion for adventure led them to not only explore the waterway but also become proud representatives of Virginia’s crucial waterways. Through their experiences, they have come to appreciate the river’s vastness, age, and importance to the community.
