The 54th running of the West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Casino, Resort & Races on August 4 will feature 38 nominees, including horses with recent derby wins. Trainer Bob Baffert has nominated Muth and Parenting, while Brad Cox has nominated Dragoon Guard and Timberlake. Other notable nominees include Batten Down, Henro, Pandagate, and Honor Marie.
The accompanying Grade III West Virginia Governor’s Stakes has 55 nominees, including last year’s winner Red Route One and West Virginia-bred Coastal Mission. The entries for both races will be taken on July 30.
The Derby program will be held on a Sunday with first post time at 5 p.m., following a successful shift to a twilight program in 2023. General admission for the event is $10, or $15 with a West Virginia Derby glass. Food trucks, live entertainment, bounce houses, and a caricature artist will be available for attendees to enjoy.
