Virginia, the Birthplace of Presidents

Virginia boasts the title of being the home to more Presidents of the United States than any other state. From George Washington to Woodrow Wilson, the birthplaces and homes of nine Presidents are open to the public for exploration.

George Washington, the nation’s first President, was born in the Northern Neck of Virginia. Visitors can explore his birthplace, which includes a Colonial Revival garden and a family cemetery where his ancestors are buried. George Washington’s Mount Vernon, averaging one million guests a year, offers a look into Washington’s life and business ventures.

Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello dazzles guests with its design and history, while James Madison’s Montpelier tells the story of the Father of the Constitution. James Monroe’s Highland, adjacent to Thomas Jefferson’s property, provides insight into both Monroe and the enslaved people who lived and worked there.

Berkeley Plantation, the ancestral home of Benjamin Harrison, was the site of America’s first official Thanksgiving. Sherwood Forest Plantation, home to John Tyler, is the longest frame house in America. Zachary Taylor’s birthplace, near Montebello, is not open to the public, but a historical marker marks the spot.

Woodrow Wilson’s childhood home in Staunton now serves as a historic site for learning and events. With each President bringing their own unique history and legacy to the state of Virginia, visitors have the opportunity to explore these magnificent presidential estates and gain a deeper understanding of America’s history.
