The 2024 Paris Olympics have officially begun, with many athletes with ties to Virginia Tech competing in various events, particularly swimming. Seven former Hokies are taking part in the games, showcasing their talents on the international stage.
Some notable athletes include Neil Gourley, who excelled as a middle distance runner at Virginia Tech and is now a contender for a bronze medal in the 1,500 meters. Nickeil Alexander-Walker, a former basketball player for the Hokies, will represent Canada and could help his team compete for a silver medal. In women’s basketball, former Hokie Sami Hill will play for Canada, aiming for a top-five finish.
Legendary former swimmer turned head coach at Virginia Tech, Sergio Miró, will lead Hokies Anton McKee and Snæfríður Jórunnardóttir in their respective swimming events. Carles Coll Marti, Ian Ho, and other Hokies will also compete in swimming events, with Carmen Weiler Sastre and Emily Santos showcasing their talent in the pool as well.
Maxine Egner, an incoming freshman at Virginia Tech, will make her Olympic debut representing Botswana in the 100m Freestyle.
With a strong representation of talented athletes from Virginia Tech at the 2024 Paris Olympics, fans will be eagerly watching and cheering on these former Hokies as they compete for glory on the world stage.
