The Lynchburg Museum is preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Virginia 10 Miler with a new exhibit titled “500 Miles: Fifty Years of Running the Virginia 10 Miler.” The exhibit will open on August 2, with artifacts from the race’s history, including official race shirts from each year. The exhibit will also highlight the organizers, runners, and community members who have made the event a success since 1974.

The exhibit is a collaboration between the museum and the Lynchburg Road Runners Club, the race’s official organizer. Guest curator Laura Crowe will give talks about the exhibit during the opening event on First Fridays. In addition, the museum will host authors Bret Boman and Lesley McPhatter, who will discuss their new book, “The Virginia 10 Miler – Fifty Years and Still Running Strong,” which tells the story of how the race became nationally recognized, attracting elite runners from around the world.

The exhibit will be on display until October 1, leading up to the 50th running of the Virginia 10 Miler on September 28. The event has become a staple in the Lynchburg community, drawing runners and spectators alike. The exhibit and book aim to showcase the rich history and lasting legacy of the race, highlighting the people and moments that have made the Virginia 10 Miler a beloved tradition in Lynchburg for the past five decades.
