A coordinated arson attack on the high-speed railway network in France caused widespread disruptions to train travel, affecting around 800,000 people, including athletes heading to the Olympic Games opening ceremony in Paris. The fires, which targeted crucial signalling cables in pipes along multiple train lines, were reported before dawn on Friday, leading to significant delays and cancellations. The railway operator, SNCF, has stepped up security across the network in response to the attacks, with technicians working to repair the fire damage. French government ministers strongly condemned the vandalism, with Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete expressing concern over the impact on holiday travel. Minister for Sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, also denounced the attacks, stating that acting against the games is acting against France. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin expressed hope that those responsible would be swiftly arrested. SNCF CEO Jean-Pierre Farandou confirmed that an investigation was underway to identify the perpetrators of the coordinated attack. The company has made efforts to restore service, but disruptions are expected to continue on some lines in the coming days.
