Video captures meteor creating fireball in Mexico’s night sky

A flaming object spotted soaring across the sky in Chihuahua, Mexico has led to speculation that it may be a Japanese rocket launched nearly 15 years ago. Video footage of the object flying across the sky has sparked discussion about what it could be, with suggestions ranging from meteorite fragments to spacecraft debris. While authorities have not provided a definitive answer, an Aerospace post suggests that the object may be the Japanese H-IIA rocket launched in 2010.

The rocket in question is believed to be the JAXA navigation satellite Michibik, which was part of the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System project aimed at improving navigation in Asia. The satellite was designed to circle the Earth at a 45 degree inclination and was expected to reenter the Earth’s atmosphere this week. The increase in videos capturing space debris burning up in the night sky is attributed to a rise in rocket launches and more people having access to recording devices. Monitoring companies anticipated the spacecraft’s return over northern Mexico, and the event has garnered attention from astronomy experts and the public alike.
