Team USA swimmers Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, Torri Huske, and Simone Manuel won the country’s first swimming silver medal at the Paris Olympics in a thrilling relay race. Setting a national record with a time of 3:30.20, they were narrowly beaten by Australia, who set an Olympic record. Douglass started the relay, followed by Walsh and Huske, with Manuel anchoring the team and securing second place in a tight finish over China.
Additionally, the team of Jack Alexy, Chris Guiliano, Hunter Armstrong, and Caeleb Dressel won gold in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, giving the US their first gold medal of the games. Star swimmer Katie Ledecky also added to Team USA’s haul with a bronze in the women’s 400m freestyle.
Walsh set an Olympic record in the 100m butterfly semifinal, with Huske finishing second in the same event. The American swimmers showcased their talent and dedication on the first day of competition in Paris, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting Olympic games in the pool.
