Former President Donald Trump is currently leading President Joe Biden in Virginia by three percentage points, based on a new poll released by Virginia Commonwealth University-Wilder School. This comes as Republicans aim to flip the state after Biden’s 10-point victory in the 2020 election. The poll shows Biden’s support dropping from 42% to 36%, while Trump remains steady at 39%.
The poll raises concerns for the Biden camp, especially following his poor performance in a recent debate. Biden’s job approval rating stood at 36%, with 58% of respondents disapproving. The top issues in the race were identified as the rising cost of living, women’s reproductive rights, and immigration.
Illegal immigration was seen as a major problem by 52% of Virginia voters, with Democrats mostly considering it a minor issue. Additionally, support for Biden among Black voters has decreased from 67% to 46%.
Virginia, typically not considered a battleground state, is showing signs of becoming a closer race. Recent polling indicates a dead heat between Trump and Biden, with Governor Glenn Youngkin stating that Virginia “is in play” and could potentially deliver a win to Trump in the upcoming election.
While Youngkin’s approval rating has dropped slightly, incumbent Sen. Tim Kaine maintains a lead over Republican challenger Hung Cao. The poll also revealed that 53% of voters said they were less likely to support Trump due to his conviction in New York, while 31% said they were more likely to vote for him post-conviction.
