Vice President Kamala Harris is on track to secure the Democratic nomination for the upcoming presidential election, with no other prominent Democrats publicly declaring their candidacy. Harris has already secured over half of the delegate support needed to become the official nominee, and a virtual vote is set to begin as early as Thursday. The Democratic National Committee has finalized rules for a virtual nomination roll call ahead of the national convention in August. If only Harris qualifies, Democrats will start virtual voting on Thursday, and if others meet the delegate specifications, voting will begin in early August.

Harris’s path to the nomination came after President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign, citing concerns about his ability to beat Republican rival Donald Trump. Biden quickly endorsed Harris, who has since received overwhelming support from Democratic leaders and delegates as well as re-energizing young voters. While some Democrats have expressed a desire for an open nominating process, Harris’s support has largely drowned out these sentiments.

High-profile leaders in the Democratic Party, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, former President Barack Obama, and former First Lady Michelle Obama, have backed Harris’s candidacy. Biden’s decision to step aside came after pressure from several Democrats and donors following a debate performance deemed shaky. In an Oval Office address, Biden expressed confidence in his record but acknowledged the need to pass the torch to a new generation. Harris, during her campaign staff remarks, emphasized the need for hard work leading up to the election and expressed her determination to win against Trump.
