Eighteen-year-old Gary Abraham from Aiken, South Carolina, has been charged with murder and three counts of attempted murder in connection to the shooting death of 16-year-old Jakolbi Taylor from Virginia. The incident occurred on July 20 at the 16th Avenue North beach access in Myrtle Beach, where Abraham allegedly motioned for Taylor and his group to follow him down to the beach before opening fire, fatally wounding Taylor. Warrants state that the moments leading up to the shooting were caught on camera, and witnesses and known associates identified Abraham as the shooter. Police also discovered that Abraham was known to have a gun in his possession before, during, and after the shooting and would carry it inside his backpack.
Abraham was taken into custody over the weekend and appeared in court for a bond hearing, where a municipal court judge noted that he could not set bond and that the decision would have to come from a circuit court judge. No date for his bond hearing in circuit court has been set yet, but Abraham is scheduled for an initial appearance in Conway on September 20.
Taylor’s family released a statement expressing some relief that someone is in custody but demanding justice for their son’s senseless death. It is unknown if there are additional suspects or persons of interest in the case, and further details about the incident have not been disclosed.
