Finalists for the 2024 Virginia Literary Awards announced by the Library of Virginia


The Library of Virginia has revealed the 12 finalists for the 2024 Virginia Literary Awards after a selection process that involved more than 200 submissions. The awards recognize outstanding literary achievements among Virginia authors and on topics related to the state.

Librarian of Virginia, Dennis T. Clark, expressed his excitement at the opportunity to celebrate literary excellence and bring readers together with talented writers. The Virginia Literary Awards Celebration has become a highly anticipated cultural tradition in the Commonwealth.

The finalists include authors from various genres such as fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and children’s literature. Some of the notable finalists include Rachel Beanland for “The House Is On Fire,” Edward L. Ayers for “American Visions: The United States, 1800–1860,” Ariana Benson for “Black Pastoral: Poems,” and Kwame Alexander for “An American Story.”

The winners from each category will be revealed during a gala event at the Library of Virginia on September 21st. Each winner will be awarded a cash prize of $2,500.

The Virginia Literary Awards celebrate the diverse and vibrant literary community in the state, showcasing the talents of Virginia authors and highlighting the rich literary heritage of the Commonwealth. It is an event that brings together readers, writers, and literary enthusiasts to honor and support the arts.
