Rights group HRW has reported instances of severe sexual and gender-based violence in Sudan, including rape and gang rape, leading to death. Forces commanded by the RSF and SAF have committed these crimes since the civil war began in April 2023, with attacks on health facilities also noted.
The report is based on interviews with service providers who interacted with survivors in Khartoum, Khartoum North, and Omdurman, revealing widespread sexual violence against women and girls, forced and child marriage, and sexual violence against men and boys. The RSF was heavily implicated in these crimes, with the army also accused of violations.
Survivors recounted being raped by multiple perpetrators, sometimes in front of their families, and some were subjected to forced and child marriage. The physical, emotional, and psychological scars left by these crimes have been immense, with some victims dying from their injuries.
MSF also confirmed widespread sexual violence in Sudan, particularly in Darfur, where ethnic cleansing has been reported. The conflict has displaced over 10 million people, with continued fighting between warring parties for control of the country. The international community is urged to take action to address the ongoing violence and protect the survivors of these horrific crimes.
