Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, both potential running mates for Vice President Kamala Harris, avoided discussing their potential candidacy when asked on Sunday. Walz stated that being mentioned was an honor and that he would do what is best for the country if offered the job. Pritzker also refused to comment on whether he had submitted vetting materials to the Harris campaign but pledged to work hard for her regardless of the outcome.
Both governors have progressive records and are among the Democrats being considered for the vice presidential position. Other potential candidates include Senator Mark Kelly, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. Harris is moving quickly to assemble a team before the Democratic National Convention next month following Biden’s endorsement of her as the Democratic nominee.
Harris is expected to announce her vice presidential pick by August 7th. Her team is looking for a running mate who can complement her well and help unite voters to defeat President Trump. They are likely seeking someone from a battleground state or who can appeal to rural, moderate, or Rust Belt voters. The presidential race is set to be between Harris and her running mate against Trump and Senator JD Vance in the fall election.
