After a 24-hour intense search, police in Maryland recovered the body of a 6-year-old autistic boy named Fawzan Hassan who had disappeared at a park while on an outing with his family. The boy, who was nonverbal, went missing from Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg, just over 20 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. The search for him continued through Sunday, when his body was found in a pond at the park. Members of the community had alerted the police to the pond earlier that day. The Montgomery County Police Managed Search Operations Team recovered the body and positively identified it as the missing boy. Various law enforcement agencies assisted in the search, including the Maryland National Capital Park Police, Gaithersburg Police, Maryland State Police, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, and Midatlantic Dog Search and Rescue. An autopsy conducted by the Maryland Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of the boy’s death. This tragic incident highlights the importance of raising awareness about autism and water safety, as drowning is a significant risk for autistic individuals.
