A 17-year-old Nebraska boy is facing felony charges for derailing a train and posting the crash on YouTube. The teen allegedly tampered with the railway components causing a BNSF Railway train loaded with coal to derail, resulting in $350,000 in damages. Despite reporting the derailment to authorities, the teen’s suspicious behavior led investigators to believe he was involved. The train conductor confirmed that a misaligned switch, missing a padlock, caused the crash. The teen was able to describe the switch’s location and operation and showed police a video he took just before the crash. A video titled “Loaded BNSF Arbor COLLIDES and DERAILS in Bennet, NE! MOST INSANE VIDEO I’VE EVER TAKEN!” was uploaded to YouTube two days after the incident. The teen is charged with two felony counts of criminal mischief for damaging property deliberately. Prosecutors are seeking to transfer the case to adult court. Authorities are investigating the incident, and the train company has not commented on the situation.
